Eighteenth Book in The Kay Scarpetta Series. Fascinating and Entertaining Book, one of my all time favorite in The Scarpetta Series. While completing her military service in The Dover Port Mortuary Kay Scarpetta is called back to The Massachusetts Medical Examiner's Office, where she is the Chief Medical Examiner when a man who was pronounced dead at the scene has been inexplicably bleeding while locked in the cooler and is at first feared to have been put in there alive. When she arrives back at her regular office she is surprised at the havoc her second in command, Dr. Jack Fielding has caused while she was working in Dover. When the guy who was feared to have been put in the freezer alive is found with a block 9mm that traces back to Fielding, to have had parts of a super advanced fly bot that traces back to his employer and had a greyhound named Sock with him when he was murdered it makes everyone investigating realize that Jack Fielding is involved and they go to his house where they find him dead, either by suicide or murder and they find evidence from several recent murders. Kay Scarpetta has known Jack Fielding since she helped train him in forensic pathology in Virginia and he has a complicated history. He was sexually abused as a young teenager by a counselor at a therapeutic camp that he attended resulting in her becoming pregnant and having to give up the baby that was born. That woman is now serving time in Georgia for a DUI manslaughter and was the inmate who trained the retired greyhound that the last victim had with him when he was murdered and the owner of record was her (and Fielding's) daughter, Dawn Kincaid
